Over the next few editions of the Enchanted Avil we will be creating individual items that are used by a single class within your Dungeons and Dragons campaign.
Our first class exclusive item will be blade built for Paladins. Taking a leaf from the pages of the Dungeon Master’s Guide, we’ve set up what could be said to be the younger brother to the Holy Avenger, the Holy Crusader. Our intent with this sword is for it to be introduced as a special reward in early stages of a long campaign. A weapon that gives your player a unique Paladin ability, while not breaking your campaign’s balance. As the campaign continues, and the character levels up however, you can have the weapon grow as well, giving your player a campaign companion that you don’t need a voice for.
Item Name |
Holy Crusader |
Rarity |
Weapon (any sword), Rare (requires attunement by a Paladin) |
Effects |
You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. While you hold the drawn sword, it creates an aura in a 10-foot radius around you. You and all creatures friendly to you in the aura have a +1 to saving throws against spells and other magical effects. |
Intent |
Many paladins in campaigns will search long and hard for the most famous of Paladin weapons, the Holy Avenger. Obviously in a low level campaign, you can’t just add a +3 sword without breaking the balance of the campaign. Therefore we wanted to create an item that gives similar effects but something that is level appropriate. As the Paladin levels up, the weapon can level up with them, whether that be through a gift from a deity or high level magic user for completing a quest, or by having the player’s in-game deeds cause the sword to enhance itself. It would be our recommendation that this sword is accessible at level 4 or 5. At level 8 or 9, the bonus could increase to a +2 for attack and damage rolls and 1d10 of radiant damage against undead creatures. At levels 12+ this sword could then be fully upgraded to a Holy Avenger as seen in the DMG on page 174. |
As always, if you have any feedback on any of the items, including balance issues, or questions, please feel free to leave a comment on the post directly and we will get back to you as soon as we are able.
